Throwback Thursday: Late Night Date Night

Hey there Reader Friend,

This Blog was originally posted in 2019 under the title Late Night Date Night. It has been revived for you now to make you laugh and to celebrate Valentines 2026. Enjoy!

My Super Husband swept me off my feet for a date last Saturday night, but before we dive into the romantic bits (hello, duck liver pate and dessert rooms), let me catch you up on my Rothy’s saga.

When I first received my neutral points as a gift (yes, he’s a Super Husband for a reason), I wasn’t sure what to pair them with. I was in the middle of a khaki pants phase, and their gray undertones just weren’t playing nice. But lately, I’ve been living in Navy Trousers, and guess what? These shoes go with everything. Well, everything except khaki.

Now, let me set the scene from earlier this week. I was still rocking said trousers and Rothy’s after work, with fussy Tyler on my hip. The usual chaos was unfolding—he had just been caught munching on a bright pink crayon. (They get hangry after school. It’s a thing.) Apparently, I missed a few shavings in his mouth, because moments later, he threw up. In my Rothy’s.

Here’s the thing: I wasn’t as devastated as you might think. Because, drumroll please, these shoes are machine washable. But that didn’t stop Kendra from sobbing in protest. “Bad Tyler! We DON’T puke on Mommy!” she shrieked, the injustice on full display. Naturally, my older son Brian couldn’t let that slide. “Don’t yell at Tyler! He’s just a baby!” And there I was, referee to yet another sibling showdown, crayon puke still soaking into my beloved shoes.

So... date night was mandatory. 🥂

Super Husband whisked me away to Euphemia Haye, an adorable cottage-turned-restaurant on Longboat Key. It’s the kind of place with fancy food downstairs and a dessert room upstairs.

We shared a plate of duck liver pate to start. He had the steak medallions; I had shrimp and pasta. We split a slice of key lime pie that was so good, I'll never forget it.

(Note from future me: I did forget that key lime pie.)

Everything was dreamy until the long drive home made me carsick.

Then, of course, our older son had to be picked up from Grandma’s house—trouble sleeping—so he joined us for the back half of the date. Romantic, right?

Oh, and in case you were wondering, I eventually found more of that bright pink crayon. In Tyler’s diaper.

The date was fun while it lasted. Here’s to machine-washable shoes, sibling arguments, and sneaking in a little romance between the chaos.

Happy Date Night! 💕

Wild One book cover

Hey there, Reader Friend! I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is that my novella goes to the editor in less than two weeks. The bad news is that I don't know the title. I thought I did... but? The story is this: When a small-town plant whisperer breaks the greenhouse and is told she owes thousands or loses her shot at a fresh start in Colorado, she makes one reckless decision in a wealthy neighborhood that tangles her with a police officer, a relentless dog, and a man in...

Person making heart shape with hands

Hey there, Reader Friend! February is Black History Month, and as a reader, it seems like the right time to reflect on the voices we’re amplifying on our shelves. I’m a white woman book lover and my reading life is richer when it includes perspectives beyond my own. Diverse authors expand my understanding of the world. This month, I’m highlighting a few powerful novels by Black authors that moved me. Now, we already discussed The Catch by Yrsa Dailey-Ward. Just please go buy the hardcover....
